Men of Honor (2000,  R)
Men of Honor 5.0 Stars
(2000 Director: George Tillman, Jr.) This is a true story of Carl Braesher & perhaps for that reason is in parts hard to watch (endure the racisms) And this film stars some of my favorite actos/actresses, starring Robert DeNiro as a very rough but real Solider & Cuba Gooding, jr. as the son of a poor rural dirt farmer with a wish for a better life for his son.... Navy Deep Sea Recovery (the men in the iron diving suits). The supporing cast is of equally high calibre & includes Charlize Theron as DeNiro's wealthy younger Southern belle who never gives up on him!.....Michael Rappaport & Powers Booth truly moved me in this film. Definitely a worth see...

Gandhi (1982,  PG)
Gandhi 5.0 Stars
(1982 Director: Richard Attenborough)Phenomenal true story of pacifist Mohandas K Gandhi. I'd give it 7 stars because of its historical accuracy as well! Long, like 4 hours I seem to remember. Ben Kingsley again! What a versatile actor who brings to life this nobleman with great heart & passion for peace for his country. The story of the family itself is amazing in itself. Gandhi's grandson tours & visited my community college 2 years ago.

Excerpt of movie review from site "Written by: sebastian00
The movie Gandhi starts off with the assassination of Gandhi on January 30, 1948. He was killed because of the split of Hindus and Muslims into Pakistan and India, instead of trying to keep the country united (which was impossible at the time). The story then jumps back to Gandhi early in his life, when he is a practicing attorney. He is traveling in South Africa on a train and is thrown off because he refuses to give up his first class seat. The conductor wants him to move because he is Indian. This upsets him and he organizes a burning of the discriminatory codes. The protestors are arrested and released.

Gandhi is motivated by religious means; he believes that everyone is equal in God?s eyes. He gets involved in several movements for equality, and he stresses non-violence very strongly. The Indians are very mad because British rule continues to limit their rights. They are supposed to all get fingerprinted, and their marriage laws are invalid. Gandhi?s followers vow to fight their oppressors to the death, but he discourages them from violence. He and his wife form a sort of commune of purity. They live off of the land entirely. , , "

Proof (2004,  PG-13)
Proof 4.5 Stars
(2005 Director: John Madden) Dazzling. Loved it! Nothing quite like the love between a Father and a daughter. .I imagine lead actress Gwynneth Paltrow had a tear in her eye missing her own recently passed away father during the making of this film...Rented this one LAST year but thinking of my own dad iwho is illl presently. My closest oldest friend lost her father at a young age. Touching film...

10,000 B.C. 4.5 Stars
This movie surprised me...our neighbor was so impressed he loaned it to us (a rented movie). Passionate well edited and artistic rendition of primitives with some attempt at being true historically, including sabre tooth tigers & woooly mammoths done beautifullly. Wonderful panroramic vistas!! Definitely worth see! Tribal ties add to the flavor of the film

Despite some remarkable acting, I felt the editing could have been less choppy. I am not referring to the flashback sequences...where DiCapprio's character remembers some of these "big" gang leaders from when he was just a small 5 yr old boy (orphaned & arriving from Ireland)....More an attempt at an almost artistic statement surrounding conscription (unless you could pay $300 to AVOID the draft), immigration, monopolization/gang ....Extreme violence, raw in many, many parts. COULD NOT watch this film straight through... Bill the Butcher's from-the-gut speech to his "apprentice" Amsterdam (DiCapprio), was the closest thing to tender in this movie & it stays with me.....that is--except for the love that evolves between Diaz & DiCapprio's characters...wheeewwwww [true compassion of spirit & mutual empathy]

Equally, however, I was moved by Cameron Diaz's performance & the story of her character & her "scar"(much worse than my own) but a significantly deeper scarring of her psyche...life as a street urchin from age 12 (orphaned) & taken in by the seemingly compassionless Bill the Butcher (crime boss)......so many faces his character shows...Bill's lasting admiration for "Amsterdam's" dash aka guts....Bill even uses a bible quotation, "Lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spew you out..."
