A phenomenal film. A rare masterpiece. The acting is very good from every member of the cast. The screenplay is thought provoking and inspirational. The cinematography is utterly spectacular because the images shown are so memorable they will just stay with you for a long time. And most importantly the film is ultimately entertaining. American Beauty is a rare film.
Reminded me of Nabokov's Lolita at times, with a dash of Girl, interrupted.
Loved it. Simply brilliant!
Couldn't we all relate to this movie i mean doesn't every family have problems? i mean not exactly these situations but something like it?
A dream-scape of emotions and..flaming passions. The ultimate suburban satire (screenwriter Alan Ball went on to create the masterful series Six Feet Under) and of the films you could say aren't so bad as to winning the best picture at the Academy Awards.
American Beauty is a captivating film. The tagline "... look closer" is probably the best tagline ever written, as if you actually look closer at the layers this movie has to offer, you'll find yourself enjoying it more and more each time.
And, as lame as that may sound, its true as far as I'm concerned.
This movie was treated with delicacy and doesn't really fit into a single genre. Its funny, dramatic, a bit romantic, whodunit, and is a masterpiece of cinematography.
American Beauty is still my favourite film even after ten years. It has the best score i've ever heard in a film, fantastic performances (by all) and a great story (a rare thing these days).
Wow. This was such a powerful movie.
Is it repression or oppression?
What we want or what we need?
What we see or what is there?
I don't think a lot of people would understand the subtleties and power of the message conveyed - or even would have picked up on the motifs.
Terrific analysis on family life and shows how the perfect setting may not necessarily bring happiness. Sam Mendes' film debut is a brilliant dissection of a man's mid-life crisis and how he seeks redemption. The cast is brilliant but it's Spacey and Bening who stand tall among the great ensemble.
Blargh. Overrated.
A British man's attempt to "capture" (in other words STEREOTYPE) American society - if this is what we've become - a pathetic, dreamless, goal-less "head of household" married to an equally pathetic desperate female....it's time for me to jump ship.
The only likable character is the neighbor boy (played by Wes Bentley) his character is the only artistic touch to a film that mocks the American family. All other frills as far as filmmaking are cheap tricks a student could achieve. Depressing & pointless in my opinion...you almost feel sorry for all of it's characters (for lame reasons, so why bother?)
Great movie! Kevin Spacey is brilliant & Annette Bening was really good, too. Makes you think a bit.
It took me years to appriciate this movie. The first time I saw it I thought wow what a piece of crap. Now I think wow what a great commentary on life in America Today! I still hate the stupid kid with the bag.
Amazing. Everything you would want in a movie. Touching, Funny, Dramatic, Suprising, and is just the Perfect Movie. Definetly in my top 3.
A beautiful film, about irrational wants, middle age and the fragility of desire. The scene where Lester turns away from Angela is heartbreaking in its lucidity.
Lester Burnham is probably my favorite character of all time. Not to mention an outstanding script, cast, and director behind that fact. A great, great movie.
Completley amazing. Briliantly acted and directed. Very thought provoking, too. It deffinatley deserved Best Picture.
A perfect film! Every aspect of it is excellent. While the acting from Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening is great, the person who stood out to me is Chris Cooper. The scene where he goes over to Lester in the rain is a great scene. I love how you can see the tears with the rain drops. Chris is great in every scene he's in. I'm shocked he wasn't nominated for this! But i'm glad that he won for Adaptation, now he's an Oscar Winner!
Sam Mendes got it right. Kevin Spacey had a shining moment with this one. Annette Benning nailed it.
I didn't necessarily like this movie. I think the main reason for this was that I don't relate with anything that happens or is really felt during the film... However It's worth noting that I appreciated Chris Cooper's acting waaay more than any of the other's, even Spacey's. After the garage scene I couldn't help but point at him walking away in the rain and say, "That right there is good acting".
before this movie i could never believe kevin spacey as a lover boy but he made that miracle happen and that wasn`t just because of his performance but also the magic of steven who brought us this masterpiece well shaped diamond to watch and enjoy.
so thanks steven and thanks the academy for delivering the oscar to the right man.
I watched this on T.V. a long time ago. So this review wont be the fullest since I havent reviewed it till at least a year after watching it. But from my memory, I didnt get it. It was werid, and seemed somewhat pointless. I mean I think I understood it, but to me it just was boring. I dont know though. Maybe its just me, I mean this movie it highly rated, and celebrated so....maybe I just missed something.
this fiilm is absolutly brilliant! it will make u cry and think! bit of a wierd film but you will love it!!
A psychological drama picturing dysfunctional family in America. The closing scene with Beatles's Because touched me.
What isn't perfect about this movie? The script? The cast? The criticisim? The humour? The music? The cinematography? Mena Suvari's tits? Everything is just amazing. I specially love Spacey's character, but also all the rest (except for Annette Benning's...); they're all so vulnerable. Chris Cooper is breathtaking in the ending. One of the very few movies I consider perfect. The plastic bag thing is not that great though, that's true.

I brought this movie along time ago but never seen it till now lol.
No doubtedly one of the best modern movies, and my absolute favourite so far. American Beauty casts light on various aspects and is very daring, which I applaud. It was magical the first time I watched it. Nothing but praise for this movie from me!
"I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry... you will someday." Ang ganda! ^*^
I feel so bad. I missed the last 30 minutes of this...can someone fill me in??????? please!!! I listened to it, but didn't understand what happended.
ace film first time i watched this film i ended up getin some g13 seeds and growin them had me a gd few months of just smileing even when the police found my othere plants in my shed lol but that was then i dont do it anymore and feel beeter for it ,
easily one of the greatest modern films ever made. even one of THE GREATEST films ever made. i love it too much.
This was an amazing movie and is definitely one that everyone should see. It is quite easily my favourite movie of all time at the moment. The psychological traits of the charachters are brilliant and you almost "think along" witht he charachters as the plot unfolds and at times feel their emotion...
This was an awesome movie, but I was pissed bc the year it came out it won the Oscar for Best Director and it was NOT the best directed movie that year!
