This was different, this didn't focus on just one character but all of them. I can see why it won best film. Brilliant
This film dwells into the darkside of humanity telling the story of the invisible boundaries that seperate the ignorant people of the world. Unlike horror films which show fictional terror and whatnot this film disturbs in ways you never imagined. Think children shouldn't be put in dangerous situations in films? Well this movie has a scene that will shock even the people that don't particularily like children. The film features an all star cast of people eye don't care about which includes the not star Chris(LudaChris) the stupid hip-hop artist and a bunch of other more talented people. Seriously Chris being in this movie deducted one entire star from the score. Apart from a lame singer, the movie doesn't have a very good opening. But once it gets started toward the middle and end it really pumps up becoming emotionaly intense introducing twists such as a seemingly evil person becoming a truly understanding good person, and seemingly good characters becoming lost and corrupt. Certain parts of this film are just so touching and evil it really gets you thinking about what kind of world we live in. Eye don't know why the director tried to incorporate such harsh dark humor it just isn't nowhere near being humorous, but eye guess he was trying to elevate about what people say and do in the real world. Check this film out if you are comfortable with it's subject matter, racism being the primary.
Crash is probably the most thought-provoking Best Picture winner I've seen. I call it the most thought-provoking because you actually wonder and ponder how it pulled that feat off. I mean it's pretty strong, but it's not a masterpiece. The movie does a fairly good job of presenting characters that are obviously taught harsh life lessons over the course of the film, but it's not stellar. Also, the movie left me with an odd feeling of distaste I can't shake. I almost felt manipulated, probably because of its stereotypes though. It's hard and kinda weird to call a movie about stereotypes stereotypical...so I won't. Things are the way they are to get the point across about stereotypes and racism. Let's just say if the performances weren't as strong as they are I would probably hate the story.
And man oh man are there some great performances in this movie. Almost every single actor and actress gives it everything they've got. If there is ever a movie were you can claim the movie is elevated by the performances it would have to be Crash (but with a cast like this it BETTER have been damn good). Matt Dillon, Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, Ryan Phillippe, and Terrence Howard turn in some brilliant performances here. But I would say I was most impressed with Thandie Newton.
It tends to feel a little preachy because of some of the dialogue but not enough to detract too much from the power resonating throughout the film. I think most people love this movie because they connected with it on a deeper level, it elicits (or maybe it forces out through manipulation) some form of pure emotion from them (whether it be anger, sadness, fear, or surprise). Isn't that one of the core things true movie lovers want from movies? I think it is, and that is probably the reason it beat Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture (though admittedly Brokeback probably deserved it more). I think it beats Brokeback in poignancy. There's no denying this movie is pretty powerful.
Too eager to redeem its characters instead of discussing the important issues it raises. Rings false.
It's a small world people!! This movie was disturbing but AWESOME!!! Unfortunately a true depiction of the world today...
A disturbing yet true look at our world today, at the differences of race, color, and language that alienate us from each other and the similarities that bring our lives crashing together.
Couldn't keep a plot line. I know they were just trying to make a point about racial standings but it was really awful.
I've never seen such a deeply moving film before. Everyone is connected and there's so much truth to what goes on in their lives.
This is life. A great display of real life. So vivid that I sometimes felt like screaming and eventually kicking some of the characters right in the ass.
And this is exactly what I most liked about this movie. The fact that it was capable of bringing out all sorts of emotions within me while I was watching it.
Most of the time, I tend to really appreciate a movie that is capable of remaining truthful to reality. And that was exactly what happened here. The plot is presented in such a realistic manner that you won't be able to become indifferent to it. Every situation will somehow cause you to feel some kind of emotion towards what is being displayed, and you will actually feel like you are watching it live and not on your tv set. Real life characters such as these are very hard to find when it comes to movies nowadays. And, to me, that's what makes this movie so special. It portrays people as they really are and not as either plain good or plain evil. Because people aren't like that at all.
Most films tend to fail in that specific area, in that they often present the clichéd segregation between 'the good guy' and the 'bad guy'. In Crash, all the characters are both the good and the bad guy at the same time. They really are like you and me, and everybody else around. And when it comes to heroes... I guess you can say there are a few heroes in this movie. Real life ones, I mean. The kind of heroes that you would find just around the corner on any given day.
So, yes, this movie is indeed as realistic as it can be and, gladly, not far fetched in any way. Plus, the screenplay is very good and also very intense emotionwise.
How could one possibly not like it, then?...
Don't answer.
Can't really remember this movie but I do remember that it could have been really good but the ending totally sucked!
Great thought provoking movie. Eevn though it steers you pretty directly to where you think your going. It is expertly acted and directed.
Not to be confused with David Cronenberg's audacious 1996 film of the same title. Screenwriting great Paul Haggis' directorial debut never becomes the ambitious American mosaic he wants it to be, and the end result feels like a preachy gimmick rather than a focused study. The film's structure and melodramatic atmosphere teeters on being a rip off of P.T. Anderson's "Magnolia"(the best film of 1999), and the way the themes of race and social injustice are explored seem snatched directly from Spike Lee's 1989 masterwork "Do the Right Thing". This is a very disappointing Oscar win, but then again they haven't given a deserving film a best picture statuette since "Unforgiven"(1992)..
Paul Haggis directs a nonlinear movie, similar in tone to Tarantino's movies, but less fun, where Matt Dillon plays a racist cop who has a lot of issues, and everyone else in the flick has a lot of issues. It becomes annoying how many people are just overwhelmed with angst. Hollywood digged this because it had angst in it and gave it best picture of 2004, even though that honor clearly should have gone to Capote.
WOW, an explosive cast, and a excellent look to racial tention in american mixed with a touch of reality. This is a Must see DVD.
Good, I guess it won a bunch of awards, and it definitely has its moments. There is a better movie by the same name that is far creepier though.
Three times academy award winning movie "Crash" is the best episode movie I have ever seen. It's intensity of portraying the melting pot of Los Angeles with all it's resentments, racism, crime, fear and madness, the latter being the only reason for me to ever going back there, is unmatched. "Crash", or "L.A. Crash" as it is called in Germany, is a must-have in any collector's library.
I can't believe that I just saw it. This movie was great. One of the best movies. The story was fantastic. Everyone needs to see this movie.
An amazing film that is captivating right from the start. It paints a bleak picture of racism in LA but it has a powerful and thought provoking message. Each character in the story is connected to another in a way that is not revealed until the end.
The film makes you challenge your own preconceptions of people and race and surprises you with its character developments. Brilliant (31.7.08)
had a same feeling i had after watching italian job - not spectacular - i guess it's not my kind of genre...
Not a kinda happy movie. Amazing sense of reality. Funny. Yet very sad.
It is a fantastic movie nobody should miss. The characters are made beautifully, having their own light and space. Unexpected turn-outs. Small words that mean so much.
One-Sentence Review:
"Although the isolation and interconnectedness of automobiles and traffic are one of the driving metaphors of Paul Haggis's film Crash, the experience of the film's characters is more like a roller-coaster, where random strangers are thrown together through twisters and turns of a journey out of there control"
(Racism film never been this powerful)
Years later, I still can?t get over the fact that this drivel won the Best Picture Oscar over Brokeback Mountain. If I could give a film zero stars, I would here. And no, that?s not just because of the Oscar controversy. I remember coming out of the theatre long before awards season feeling like I?d just been slapped in the face.
The acting is decent, I?ll give it that much (I guess the half-star has to count for something). But any actor can be great if you give them such simplistic, wrenching material as this. The characters are horribly underwritten, each one only gets one or two scenes to shine. None of the storylines are connected in any way, except by the very loose racism theme, and most of the time it can?t even broach that subject with any intelligence. They are all overwrought, and they hit you over the head again and again with the preachy ?message? it?s trying to deliver. Once would have been plenty!
Then it?s all strung together with cheap, hyped up TV-style editing. With Paul Haggis background in television writing, it doesn?t surprise me that the dialogue in this film is also very pedestrian and obvious. This could have been a half decent movie of the week at best, but it certainly doesn?t sit in the same league as Brokeback Mountain, or any of the nominated (or even the not nominated) 2005 cinematic gems.
In Spanish the name of the movie is "vidas cruzadas" or intersecting lives. This is a good summary. Shows the world in an inter-connected and enlightened way.
:O WOW!... excellent movie!! frankly I'm surprised... Awesome storyline! lots of twists, you'll never see 'em coming!... you'll learn a lot about we humans. how our ignorance, n mistakes can change so many others lives... excellent cast..MUST SEE..

I've removed everyone on my friends list who gave this less than a 3/5 or trash talked it. Give me a break, open your eyes and get educated.
People who have trashed this movie with bad ratings and reviews may as well be those narrow-minded individuals who are blind to what's really taking place in society and to their own prejudices. Hello??!!! It won best movie of the year! It's an eye-opening movie that portrays the reality of what American society has become. It makes you pause for a while to rearrange your stance in life and the gravity of your actions to others. Causes you to think & rethink Don Cheadle's soliloquy at the beginning of the movie. It is my opinion that every human being should see this film...
just wanna add that this is not a documentary so its bound to be artificial. it not even a docudrama.
one of the most racist movies made about anti-racist. totally pretious and contrived. totally fake.(yuck!)
My favorite movie ever, all the characters ar great,in fact the most "populars",Sandra Bullock and Brendan Fraser are the ones that maybe are not in the level of all the others, like Michael Pena, the scene with his daugther its the hardest scene I ever seen, the only movie that made my cry.....well,maybe the end of Braveheart also....
