Plot: Dark secrets, family torments, and two murders swirl around the stoic, hardened figure of Dolores Claiborne (Kathy Bates), a housekeeper accused of murdering her employer of 22 years. Then there was t...( read more read more... )hat timely accident that took Dolores's husband (David Strathairn) during the solar eclipse of 1975. Yet with all the somber suffering that follows Dolores like a miasma of pain, none of it compares with the heartache of a relationship she has with her grown daughter (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Although this flick is rife with horror, it is not of the supernatural kind, but rather of the torment only real people can impose on one another. The script is full of colorful language, and director Taylor Hackford successfully weaves several plot threads and psychological dilemmas throughout this engrossing tale without diminishing any of them. He not only culls intense performances from his cast, but he also brings to life the landscape around them. When the film's best-kept secret is finally given up, it occurs under the surreal backdrop of a solar eclipse that is a truly sensational bit of cinematography. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Awesome mystery movie. I was very impressed by both the writing and the acting. Kathy Bates really does have some acting chops on her. Worth the watch.

Kathy Bates plays a quiet hardworking New England woman who is accused of murdering her employer. The story unfolds depicting two murders and how far people can go to protect themselves and their children.

I pretty much ignored this film when it was first released. I watched on it's first airing on TV, & I literally couldn't believe at how good it is. So I went out & rented it, & yep, I was right. It's that good.
The story is just perfect from beginning to end. And Kathy Bates, IMO, turns in an even better performance than she did in Misery. The plot may tend to come off as a bit complicated, but the movie does a great job of walking the viewer thru the intermingling flashbacks & varoius plot points that show the main character's journey to save her daughter from the father's "parental indulgences" & how that struggle can lead us to find strength in the most unlikely of places.

decent, especially for a stephen king adaption. the transitions from past to present are nice and at times seamless. JJL is sadly the weakest of the actors. overall, well-paced and reserved (in a good way).

A so-so movie that's veeery slooow. And depressing. Maybe Taylor Hackford was trying to establish mood and if his intention was to bore the audience, he totally succeeded. Granted the book its based on isn't very good either. Boo, Stephen King.

Since I am a Steven King fan I had to watch this movie. It was alright, however, you know the movie is never better than the book.

A great adaption of a Stephen King work. Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh are excellent as usual. I throughly enjoyed watching such great female actors together.

Excellent and powerful movie, well above average. Bates is wonderful as the mother accused of two murders. Every character in this movie is defined and compelling, and murder is not the only secret.

I made a mistake neglecting this movie before because of its unattractive dvd cover, alas, when I finally watched it I found myself captivated by the story which was rich in both suspense and beauty, another masterpiece adapted from Stephen King's novel!
Most movies more or less have flaws in their plots, but this one had its present event and past memories interwoven naturally and smoothly,so when I watched the movie i just felt that the directer seemed to know exactly what I expected to see according to a logical sequences of event, but I'm not saying that it was being predictable, but how the story developed towards an expected general direction yet with the secret details kept intriguingly suspenseful.
Now comes to the story,it was simply about a young woman finding understanding and forgiveness in her alienated mother. However, with all the unsolved family past as well as vivid description and profound exploration of the characters, especially Dolores who is one of my favourite mothers on screen, the story became alive and heartfelt.Dolores was so admirable with Kathy's outstanding performance of an Oscar Best Actress.
Highly recommended this movie, and if you're a dvd watcher like me rather than a movie goer take my advise ,don't judge a movie by its cover:)

This was quite teh powerful piece and Kathy Bates was simply amazing in her performance here. As much as I enjoy seeing Kathy as a confident, self-assured woman, her being cast as the downtrodden Dolores still remained chilling in its realism.
