Plot: Envy is a funny movie, but it's more funny peculiar than funny ha-ha, so enjoyment is purely a matter of personal taste. When Nick (Jack Black) invents an aerosol spray that makes...( read more read more... ) dog-poop disappear (think of the boon to society!), he reaps a fortune overnight and sends his friend, co-worker and neighbor Tim (Ben Stiller) into a tailspin of simmering envy, since he had no faith in Nick's get-rich-quick scheme and declined his offer of 50-50 partnership. What makes this potentially raucous plot peculiar is that it sets up the situation and proceeds to ignore its most comedic implications, opting instead for a sub-plot involving bows, arrows, a dead horse, and an eccentric vagrant (Christopher Walken, offering reliable comic relief) who coaches Tim on the joys of neighborly blackmail. All the while, Envy suffers a comedic identity crisis, giving Black and Stiller a few good laughs (along with their on-screen wives, played by Rachel Weisz and Saturday Night Live's Amy Poehler) while director Barry Levinson struggles to reach a quirky balance of morality play and blue-collar farce. He never quite gets there. --Jeff Shannon

It's awfully tough to give this movie a good score. I personally didn't find the story, or the performance by Ben Stiller or Jack Black to be very good at all.
I'm not really sure who the writers intended this movie to be for, I don't think a story like that should be spread out for an hour and a half. I mean, I kind of understand the envy part of the story but the reason for it is kind of ridiculous and I found the performances by Stiller, and Black to be very disappointing to say the least. The only actor who had a good performance in this movie was Christopher Walken in my opinion, but it seems he's always giving it his all. There are some good things about this film as well though, the soundtrack was very good and the dialogue very clever.

I "Envy" those who haven't seen this yet!

Let me start off by saying I really like Ben Stiller. I have enjoyed many of his films and I think he is very talented comically; not just his performances but his work behind the camera such as his writing, directing and producing. I also really like Jack Black. He is hilarious and I have enjoyed quite a number of his films.

So when I heard that Ben Stiller and Jack Black were going to make a movie together, I was instantly interested in seeing it. I wasn't necessarily expecting Envy to be a great movie, but with Ben Stiller AND Jack Black working on the project I expected it to be at least worth the viewing. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I never got a chance to see this in the theater (maybe because it was not out very long?), so when it came out on DVD I spent money to watch it at home. Please don't make the same mistake that I made. That's why I am writing this review - if I can save at least one person from making the same mistake, then this will have been worth it.

This movie was not funny at all. Perhaps there were a few funny lines here or there, but I didn't find myself laughing very much at all. Let me qualify all of this by saying I enjoy comedies. I have seen all kinds, including plenty of brainless, far-fetched comedies. More often than not, even with the bad ones, there is enough comedic value that it made me laugh and was worth seeing. This is simply not the case with this movie. It was just so dumb and the plot was so implausible.

I still like Ben Stiller and Jack Black, and even this won't stop me from seeing their future work, but this movie sure was a big disappointment.

So stupid, I liked it. I loved the fact that the message was about friendship. Jack Black and Ben Stiller? Amazing as always. Fabulous actors!

The invention was just WTF?! I mean, different, quirky, strage? YES! A tad bit freaky? Yeah a little! Vapouring poo? Seriously?! Haahaa! That's what I loved about it!

The story was just pointless and ridiculous, but that didn't really matter because Black and Stiller made up for it!

Watch it if you're bored, or if you're hyper! Lol! Worth a few laughs!

Nothing special, the only good things about it were:
    - the whole message about how important the true friendship is, and
    - lots of good actors.
So yeah, just watch it if you don't have anything else to watch and you just want an average movie with good actors and a good message

I found Envy to be stupid; There wasn't enough humour in it which really sucked because Ben Stiller and Jack Black are really funny actors.

Personally, I consider Ben Stiller, Amy Poehler, and Jack Black great comedians, especially Jack Black. Still, this movie blows.

05-03-08 -- Jack Black & Ben Stiller... its exactly what you think. Uncomfortably funny. I mean you got Jack Black's "crazy fat guy" funny and you got Ben Stiller's "how did I get into this situation" type of funny. Envy explores what would happen if you passed on your best friends idea/invention and he made millions of dollars only for you to watch him spend it... insanely. Christopher Walkens appearance in the movie was definately a well added chemistry mix. Love the Walken "serious" funny guy thing.

Man-o-man. I can only imagine that the people who hate Envy are lovers of classics such as: The Fast and the Furious and Spiderman 3. Here are a few reasons why this movie is awesome. The amazing soundtrack. Christopher Walken. Its originality. You know, originality as in not about dancing, hot babes, or torture. Sure its not in anyones top ten list and in no way should ever win any awards. But in comparison to everything else I keep running into, this one rocks.

Not enough Jack Black, Jack should have played Stillers character.

Christopher Walken stole the movie from both of them.

Like the synopsis says, it's more of a funny peculiar than a funny to roll over and die from laughs.

Vaguely amusing in part, a less than dazzling script is over worked by the talented comedians in cast. We get fairly spontaneous ridiculousness and a covetous accidentally on purpose killing of a stallion and the cost associated with burying the secret.

Jack Black and Ben stiller play as great friends when Nick(jack black) comes up with this weird idea to vapourize POO. Tim (ben stiller) thinks its a silly idea and it will never work. But strangly it does, nick becomes increadibly rich and Tim becomes extremely envious.

Love Walkens part in it. If you watch it, you'll not likely see it again, but you'll quote from it by saying 'pocket flan' and remeniss about shooting a stallion.

Could it be... Could it be the worst movie of all time? I've heard that Jack Black and Ben Stiller TRIED to stop this movie from coming out.. I don't blame them, it really showcased the worst of them.

Very silly. And a bit random, too. Unravels terribly at the end, but some good lines, and very vivid frustration from Ben Stiller.
