The original classic film. Janet Leigh is prominent. An inevitably prodigious adaptation of the novel. The suspense and camera usage in this film is highly conspicuous. Unmistakably, the "crème de la crème" of it's genre.

My first Hitchock's movie. I start enjoying the movie just in the middle of the plot. I easily discover that Bates was also his own mother, who whas murdered ten years ago. The story was so well told and designed that scares your pants off in a very elegant way. Even though is a black and white movie, the scenario plays an important role along with the actors. Good movie in a psychiatry point of view.

First time I saw this was on a big screen at cinema museum where seats are uncomfortable, air stinks of sweat and projector makes funny noises typical of, say, J! Horror genre. I didn't care, as I was so cited to finally see a movie I heard so much about. Didn't enjoy it all that much. Famous "Shower scene" was just to fake to be scary, the staircase scene was even worse, and acting seemed strange. Thats what you get when you bring high expectations to cinema.
Some years went by, and I've seen it again. Man, oh man. Every little peace of this film was perfect. Sure, those scenes look fake, but who cares. The music, the camera, the script, even the acting, everything seems to be perfect on second watching. Staircase scene can make you jump even though you know what's it about. Every word from Normans lips makes your skin crawl, and the fake shower scene is all the more gruesome for that very same reason.

This is officially one of my all time favorite movies.

I don't know where to begin.

The camera angles, the trickery in making you think the story is about Marion, the simple astounding performance of Anthony Perkins, the complexity of character, the irony of the situation, God!!!!!! I love it too much.

Hitchock is a genius, but the script writer is brilliant.

Il primo vero horror-thriller moderno. Scene entrato di diritto nella storia del cinema. Nessuno ha mai saputo creare tensione con la sola sapienza registica come Hitchcock.

This is definetly an Alfred Hitchcock classic; this movie is filled with horror and suspense, and an upexpected turn around every corner. When the main character is killed off, it is easy to ask yourself, 'What happens next.' However, as the film progresses, it gets scarier and scarier, showing the true genious that a horror film can achieve. Do not watch this film if you have heart problems, because it will have you on the edge of your seat.

I, like most people, have favourite film directors, but only a few of them, I would class as being true masters. Stanley Kubrick is one of these (see Peter Neal's fantastic review of "The Shinning") and Taratino as well as Alfred Hitchcock. Or should I say, His Majesty (of suspense) Alfred Hitchcock! And I would also say, that his 47th film that he directed, "Psycho" is his best work and most influential to film in general. I would also argue that this film is one of the most shocking films to have been made, if you don't just associate shock with repulsion and violence, as many many people walked out or even fainted whilst watching this in the cinema. Infact one girl even complained as the film gave her a severe phobia of showers!!!!!!!
One of these ways that I mean shock is created is through the narrative. This film is full of MacGuffins (a term coined by Hitchcock himself!). These include the policeman 'interrogating' Marion Crane, Crane's employee seeing her in the car as she is making a dash for it (payed homage to in Quentin Taratino's 1994 "Pulp Fiction") as well as the most obvious and shocking one, Marion Crane's untimely death, since up to that point she was the star of the film, she was also the most well-known actress in the film as well . MacGuffins are now used in many, many films in order to shock the audience and provide a very intriguing narrative twist. From Shameless's own "Night Train Murders" (1975; Aldo Lado) (the first train is not the 'murder train' of the title surprisingly) to "Pulp Fiction" and it's mysterious contents of the briefcase (the best explanation being that it is Ving Rhame's character's / the Devil's soul - hence the glow from the case, the misquotation of the Bible by Samuel L. Jackson, the plaster on Rhame's neck and ofcourse "...divine intervention"! But enough about that film! ).

Another part of this film which is truly amazing is Bernard Herrmann's musical score which is possibly one of the best soundtracks in a horror film, which also provides other MacGuffins when it builds and builds revealing nothing at times. This too has influenced countless films, from the obviously inspired "Re-Animator" (1985; Stuart Gordon) score by Richard Band, to the opening credits in the Pedro Almodovar's 2004 drama "Bad Education". And it's even more interesting when you realise that at first Hitchcock never wanted there to be a score (hence the lack of music in "The Birds" (1973)). As well as this, the acting is unbelievably good - especially from Anthony Perkins - although he never even was nominated for an award! - and Janet Leigh (mother of Jamie Lee Curtis!) not winning her award!

This film is probably most famous for its 'Shower Montage' which took 70 cameras and a whole WEEK to shot the 45 seconds! Alone, these 45 seconds managed to create huge controversy as it is so well shot and edited that people believed they actually could see the knife penetrating Crane's flesh (a Freudian metaphor similar to in "New York Ripper") as they had not seen anything remotely violence in film for quite some time due the strict 'Production Code' enforced at the time. As well as this, the Jekyll and Hyde-like twist is one of THE most famous twists in cinema history (along with "The Sixth Sense" (1999; M. Night Shyamalan).) - although seeing Bates in a dress can cause some unintentional humour.

The film is also full of Hitchcockian 'traits' including his infamous cameo! Also, the way he creates a likeable villain (Norman Bates, the audience feels for the villain when the car he tries hiding in the water gets stuck) which can also be seen in his "Dial M For Murder", for instance. As well as his luv for birds (the feathered kind) as seen in the stuffed birds and Marian CRANE's name.

Overall, I think that this is one of Hitchcock's greatest films, and influenced cinema, in particular horror, greatly (this gave birth to the slasher subgenre). I truly luv all the twists and the incredible montage as well as the music which complements the film being shot in black and white (to give it a low-budget, gritty and more realistic feel) perfectly. It too, like the other two reviews, has VERY interesting readings regarding if its crisisises patriarchal or matriachal society. For instance; the lack of a father figure, resulted in the mother becoming dominant and powerful (in Norman's mind) resulting in dangerous problems, furthuremore, Marion, a strong female is punished. This film is one of the better films inspired by the true story of Ed Gein (a psychotic killer who seemed so friendly he wouldn't even ?...swat a fly? as Bates would say (!) which also influenced "Silence Of The Lambs" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" to name but a few). The only fault I can find with this film, is how the middle of the film seems to be slightly slow compared to the very engaging first half. This film is A MASTERPIECE, no wonder why this was Hitchcock's greatest box-office success (the only film to beat it's profit was "Ben-Hur"!).

So, do I luv it? No. I LUUUUUV IT!

    I give it 5/5 luvs!

This was a great movie! I don't really like seeing blood and guts on screen, and I don't think it adds much anyway. I thought that this was much better. The shower scene, of course, is terrifying (taking showers is so scary now haha), and so is the scene at the end. Completely caught me by surprise - no one had spoiled the end for me, I totally fell for the cover story that is set up (I won't reveal anything here). I found Norman Bates an incredibly interesting character.
This is truly a great suspense/horror movie. So much better than all the senseless gory stuff that's out there today.

This movie is the perfect example of the genius of a great director and the wonderful things he can achieve. I dare one contemporary director in these times to pull of the secrecy of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho". That aside, I think Psycho is a classic example of how to control the suspense in a mystery/thriller/horror movie.

Everyone knows the famous shower scene even if they haven't seen the movie. But what most people don't know is that that was the first movie ever to have a toliet in the bathrrom during a movie. Anthony (Tony) Perkins was an excellent actor and the movie was fantastic because of him. He changed your opinion of the brain and what can happen to it and every line he says keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is deffinatly a classic Alfred Hitchcock movie and everyone should see this movie at least once in their lifetime. The black and white wouldn't even bother you even if you hated black and white because you get so caught up in the action and the secrets that you'll be screaming and not even know it. Janet Leigh was in only about a quarter of it but she still did a stunning and beautiful performance! Another thing not many people know is that in the bathroom scene she was wearing mole skin strips over her "Private Parts" and she was amazing at keeping her eye open and glazed... motionless and not breathing while the camera was on her after her death. Vera Miles was magnificant. And Virgina Greyy who was the voice of Mother did a good voice and kept you on your toes the whole time.

"Norman Found Them Dead Together. In Bed." Since I vividly remember the remake of "Psycho" I had to SINK my vision into watching the original film. Hmm... Is it just me or was Norman Bates a hottie???? I guess I will pass because he has multi personality disorder and oh yea he is.. PSYCHO!!!! A thrilling film that just gets more classic with time. Hitchcock is and will always be forever a mastermind of suspense when it comes to his film. Everyone knows the famous "shower scene" but I felt that it could have been more suspenseful and drawn out. I love the scenic view of the "wood cabin rooms" in the motel glowing the ominous light of the "Bates Motel" sign. Not to mention the "creepy house" in the background. A wonderful unforgettable cast makes this film a must see.

Who can forget that scary but mesmerizing tune that everyone knows as the Psycho theme.
Before this movie no Director attepted to kill off the main character(well -known) in under 30 minutes.

The sound effects of the shower scene was a knife slicing a melon.
So Janet was not scared during the filming as it was done in separate takes but she said it seemed so realistic when she saw the final product she was never able to take a shower again.
