The Story of John Smith and Pocahontas has been told to many people over the years, all with some glorified love added into it. The story is actually relatively sad one. John was from England, they wanted the land, the natives held him prisoner, and he fell in love with the young Pocahontas. When she tried to be with him she was outcasted and left alone, until she was bought by the English. John was forced to leave, seeming like love would never be part of their futures.

Terrence Malick directs a film that has very little dialogue, but still manages to get its point across. It is a simple, but very effective film, that deals with love and its hardships. Malick makes the actors use there expressions to portray the emotions as much as they can. He makes them use eye movements, smiles, tears and whatver else they possibly can.

Colin Farrell gives what will probably go down as his career best performace. His expressions were meaningful, full of emotion, hope, love, sadness, triumph, defeat. Everyone knows Colin can act, he just needs the right script and he needs to feel strongly about what it is he is doing. He needs to have faith in it. He took on this challenege it payed off. His character went through many changes, and dealt with many emotions and Colin took them head on.

Christian Bale turns on what will be considered a valuable performance to the films sub plot. He comes in and tries to mend all wounds after Johns disappearence. Sometimes things just dont work out how you plan it. Sometimes they are just not meant to be.

Q'Orianka Kilcher played Pocahontas , the young native girl who falls for the enemy. What an inspiring, heart wrenching, though provoking performance. It was something fresh, something new, something I hope to see again in a film sometime in the future. She really knows how to nail it in and make it stick. Very good emtional ups and downs. Great spur of the moment emotions in her performance. She made the film, without her it would have been okish, but her performace gets it another half star.

Love is a touchy subject, one often explored, and never answered. One again we find two lovers on screen, trying to make it work, but they just cant. Love seems impossible, they are on opposite sides. Never has a period love peice ever seemed so real in a film. Period films are often glorified. This film was unique, touching, a love story that will not end up happy. Its doomed from the start.

One of the best photographed films I have ever watched. The Scenery, the technique, the shots from start to finish, amazing. The land seemed flat and plain, but it was more than that, it was early colonization when the houses were made of straw and wood, and it seemed impossible to keep warm in the winter. This film touches on many historic aspects that we probably dont even know about.

An Underrated photographic masterpeice, that is either loved or hated.

EDIT: I would like to add a quote from this film. I like to add quotes to help further express the words I used to describe a film.

Captain John Smith: All the children of the king were beautiful, but she, the youngest, was so exceedingly so that the sun himself - though he saw her often - was surprised whenever she came out into his presence. Her father had a dozen wives, a hundred children, but she was his favorite. She exceeded the rest not only in feature and proportion but in wit and spirit too. All loved her.

Colin farrell's best role, certainly. Beautiful cinematography. Remarkable film whose trailer did NOT do it justice whatsoever. this was one of the best films the year it came out

For the most part I liked this film a lot. There were some stuff that I wasn't so fond of, such as some of the voiceovers which didn't sound as poetic as that of Days of Heaven, and the overuse of music.

Classic. Like every other film Malick's made, this is one of the best of its respective decade, and one of the most gorgeous films ever made (uh, like every other Malick movie)

pace dial turned to drift. there's an interesting, and handsomely shot, story here - first meeting(s) between settlers and the settled - which sadly gets pushed to one side to allow loonng scenes of Farrell gazing at his Pocahontas (with accompanying lengthy voiceover). Bale turns up during the third act to take over gazing duties, and does a slightly less drippy job of it.

Masterful. Terrance Malick never fails to impress me. Q'Orianka Kilcher's performance is perfect (and my god, shes so beautiful!). And the cinematography... Wow. Probally the most beautifully shot movie I've ever seen!

Let's start with what I did like about this movie: the cinematography was breath taking, the acting was top notch, and the camera angles were everything it needed to be. Wonderful right? Far from it....

This is a good story and it is a beautiful piece of art. However, it is one hell of a waste of time!!! In reality, it bored the ever loving shit out of me. The only reason I watched this is because I'm a huge fan of Christian Bale, and he didn't even appear in the movie till it was 3/4 finished (and at a length of 2:10, that's looooooooong).

A very accurate tale of Pocahontas, but utterly boring. The director spends so much time trying to envelope you into the story that you can't wait to be as far from it as possible. And Colin Farrel's dialogue was nothing short of mumbling... I missed about 50% of what he said during this movie.

The beautiful background and the A list actors can't mask this piece of crap. I'm still yawning! I need red bull NOW!

Terrence Malick's fourth film in thirty-two years is 'The New World.' It's based upon the John Smith/Pocahontas tales, but this is no live action Disney production. Malick wrote the script back in the 70's and finally puts it on film here in 2005(6).

Pocahontas is played by newcomer Q'orianka Kilcher, in a wonderful turn as Pochahontas. Colin Farrell, plays John Smith, doing probably his strong work. And of no big surprise, Christian Bale also does some of his best work here playing the future husband of Pocahontas (or Rebbecca as the English rename her). None of the actors here really have a lot of dialog to work with, so Malick has them express and convey their emotions through body language. It works to magnificently. Some people clearly were bored with the movie due to this reason, but this isn't your average film. It reaches out and wants to make you feel like you are really there. And the fact that there is little dialog, outside of Malick's trademark voice overs, makes this possible. You don't have overly talky situations in real life, and often the most meaningful gestures are expressed without words. Nothing is said here for the purpose of filler.

Just like every other Malick film, 'The New World' is chalk full of symbolism. Just as every word spoken on screen is full of meaning, every image Malick inserts in his film means something. Most movies take the easy way out and explain these things for you in the end. Not Malick. He relies on his imagery to tell his hidden philosophical points. Emmanuel Lubezki takes the reins on the camera and does a beautiful job. With each film Malick has used a different cinematographer, but his visual style is always evident. Crew members have often spoke of Malick's almost preternatural understanding of cinematography. The look of his films are his own. He establishes dogmas of cinematography: for The New World, only steadicam or handheld shots were to be used, and the cameraman was encouraged to move on his own to find the rhythm of the shot, among other things.

This movie is not for everyone. Malick's movies, all four of them, move
very slowly. But they do so with all deliberate speed. Malick has a way of lulling you into almost a hypnosis with his flowing camera movements and editing style. It makes you feel closer to the real story, and it does make his movies feel longer than they actually are, in that rarely positive way. They draw you in so that you are there, in that world. If you have it in you to allow yourself to be taken in, the payoff to be found is deeply rewarding.

The plot to 'The New World' is easy enough. Everyone will get the basic
pattern here. Understanding the big picture, however, is a whole other
story. Malick, more-so than many other directors, has a way of getting
under your feet and over your head. This is very frustrating for many people who are expecting a classic narrative style.

For those with the willingness to allow Malick to take you in and let the film run over you, then 'The New World' will be unforgettable.

Without being abstract or avant-garde, this is a dramatically new and better way to tell a story using moving pictures. It is a traditional narrative but a radically patient and environmental art that services the narrative with sensual intuition.

very slow. q'orianka kilcher was so beautiful. she played pocahontas. directed by terrence malick it's another artsy flick that comes across like the thin red line minus all the decent fighting scenes. this does have some action but it's not well choreographed and the rare sequences are few and far between. most of all it's a love story. the two lovers of pocahontas are christian bale and colin farrells characters. its an interesting alternative from the animation. i'm not big on malicks work but this was ok! nowhere near as good as the thin red line mind

Beautiful peice of art he touches her and looks at her the way every man should to a woman, he doesn't fall in love with her body but her and her soul!!! Its sad that they grew apart and in the end she chooses as different path but sometimes a beautiful picture is painted not for you to enjoy it but for you to move on to the next one and only by looking at the first can you fully appreicate, understand, and love the second!!!!! If you can't understand that then your missing the entire aspect of life and its meaning! Beautiful music and a tender story (I've watched it millions of times!!!!) Always the same butterflies in my stomach completley and utterly stunning!!!

omg Exile89 you hit it on the head.
there was no dialogue, and what there was i didnt understand! you had to rely on the cinematrography to know what was going on and with all the arty shots of nothing even that was hard to follow.
and you had no idea about how much time had passed i mean come on, shots to distinguish that its a different time are easy to through in!
and not ending up with john smith in the end is was just icing on the cake.
disneys the best, it had awesome songs (even if in pocahontas 2 she got a new love interest)

i can understand why people like this film. i can apreciate the shot compostion, it was really beautiful, but it was boring as hell! it was soo slow, if it was me i would cut about an hour off it, cause all the arty shots were just boring! and i appreciate arty films, i like things that are artistcally challenging (i study media i have to look at that sorta thing all the time, hey were making an arthouse short film now) but this was just badly done, and from a director with that many years under his belt id expect a lot more!
after the whole extended bit of him living with the indians, i just ended up amusing my self by comparing the movie to Pocahontus, and finding reasons why the disney one was better. i was watching it with my dad and he were doing the same thing. by the time they got to engliand we was like "where's all the songs? and the talking tree? raccon?' but then hey they landed and their was a dog, and their was the racoon in a cage! the movie was just a bad Pochontus.

Don't you think the reason why this movie rebukes (apparently) so many viewers is because they expect an epic tale of clashing civilizations, a romance of star-crossed lovers or a novel about the first European settlements in America, and get instead a poem about trees, organic growth and the discovery and acceptance of the self and of one's place in the universe (which is very different from "resignation")? It might be judicious to see it that way before debunking it on criteria (slow, contemplative pace, few direct dialogues and such) which do not apply to it.

I can appreciate all comments on the daring aspect of the film. Its bold in its scope and accurate representation of fact. However when watching it the only thing i have seen before that i can liken it too is a 2hour long perfume commercial; Well not the entire film of course but there were these points throughout the film when he was learning the ways of the indians, when the sun is shooting through the trees and he is holding the indian women in his arms yadda yadda and i just expected it to go "Calvin Klein" or something. Don't get me wrong i appreciate the effort, and liked the contrast between the settlers and the natives, but it prob is the worst film i've seen in along time...and i've seen american dreamz another terrible film so thats saying something
